With 8 losers, North should be passing in 1st seat at your table. . .but whether West passes or overcalls 1♠ with four in the suit is a bigger question. Regardless, North can bid either 1♠ (with no interference) or 2NT (with interference, showing 10-11 HCPs and a spade stopper).

If West interferes, and North bids 2NT, South will pass with this minimum hand (and North might make 9 tricks in NT). . .but if West stays quiet at your table, North can use New Minor Forcing to show 5 spades in the suit and 10+ HCPs.

With just 23 HCPs and not a very good spade suit in North's hand, there may be a few in 3NT - and those will find 9 tricks for a great board.

East's opening bid here? If you said "2", well, you're going to be cleaning erasers after school. East has a four-card major. . .and has a hand that's strong enough that you won't want to miss a 4-4 fit in spades if there is one. So East should not open in 1st seat with a preemptive bid. East can, however, open this hand 1. South can probably double 1, and then pass whatever North bids. . .but West's going to interfere by using a redouble (implying no fit). E/W can play in either a 4-3 fit in spades or the 6-2 club fit, but the best possible score for E/W might be with cooperative opponents that end up bidding in hearts. (2 by N/S down 2 with best defense is the best possible score for E/W [+200].)

Although that 5-card diamond suit in South's hand might make South think about a minor-suit slam, 3NT is as safe a contract as you'll find in our Friday morning group.

East's lead will either be the ♣Q (hoping to drive out the two top honors in the suit at trick 1) or the ♠5, but either way North should win trick 1 in declarer's hand. As long as North goes after the diamonds right away, North will make overtricks in 3NT. Finessing or not, the Q will win a trick for West. If this trick is to be lost, it's important to lose this trick before losing control of spades. Now North can take four hearts (with a finesse of the J), two spades, four diamonds, and two clubs for 10 tricks in NT and +460.

This is a hand that will likely frustrate South at your table. West's open of 1♠ will bring a 1NT bid by East (forcing, if you and your partner play 2/1, and not forcing if you don't). South's 17 HCPs indicate South should be something here. . .but what? South's best bet is to double and hope North has something over there.

West can rebid hearts (2) to show at least a 5-4 hand in the majors, which will get passed around to South. And then, South once again has a problem. Doubling and then bidding NT shows a 20+ HCP hand. That is not what South has. South might be interested in defending 2, but expects unless that contract is doubled, it might not be a good board. Passing is the better option here, and West can go down 1 in 2 with best defense.

This probably won't be the most orthodox method of bidding, but it will get the job done at most of the tables in our Friday morning group! East has a slightly better hand than North's opener, but East can't double first - if partner bids spades, now East would have to bid a different suit and East doesn't have 17+ HCPs as that bid would show.

With South's shape (6 losers) and A - and seven spades - South just needs one spade for an 8-card fit. So South can't be blamed for jumping to what should be a good game try in 4♠.

Making 4♠ will be tricky! South can lose two clubs and a heart - easily. The key will be to not lose a diamond as well. This diamond loser can be avoided by either trumping a 3rd diamond with the ♠10 - then pulling trump - or by playing low on a heart by West so the K is good for a diamond throw later.

When you've got at least an opening hand and four cards in support of opener's major, Jacoby 2NT is a convention that can glean a lot of information in a hurry. Getting the 2NT bid out of the box isn't so tough, but what are the responses from opener that you should consider?

Your first obligation with Jacoby 2NT is to describe your hand at the 4-level if you have a good second five card suit. 4♣ would mean you're 5-5 in spades and clubs, 4 in spades and diamonds, etc. This would of course indicate a singleton or void in one of the other suits, since you can only have three other cards (and they must be either 3-0 or 2-1 split).

If you don't have a second five-card suit, then your second obligation is to show a singleton or void at the 3-level. Here, South can bid 3♣ to show a singleton or void in the suit.

If you don't have either of those situations, but a flat hand, then show your HCPs as follows:
4♠ - I've got a minimum opener and nothing extra.
3NT - I've got 15 to 17 HCPs along with my five spades.
3♠ - I've got 18+ HCPs and am expecting slam.

Remember that the lowest available rebid by opener to show HCPs, 3♠, shows the strongest hand. This gives more room to explore cuebidding aces or whatever you and your partner want to do to get to a slam.

I threw in a 3♣ bid by North in the above bidding sequence to eat up room in the auction. . .and show you that with a little cuebidding you can still get to the correct contract.

East's double of 3♣ isn't penalty here, but asking West to choose a suit. West's 15 HCPs might make some West players consider passing and converting this to a penalty double, which wouldn't be the best board (+500, North down 2 in 3♣X).

West's hand is so strong that really any game East wants (other than 3NT) West is willing to support. So West can cuebid the opponent's suit here - at 4♣ - to tell East "I don't care what you bid as long as you bid something." East's choice of the four-card spade suit should make 5, losing the ♠K and one club to the ♣A.

Who among us wouldn't open West's hand 1♠? It's a great hand to be in one of the majors, and 1♠-3♠ (by East) will get a double from South. West should go right to 4♠, but if West at your table wants to show a second suit at 4, East is likely going to correct to 4♠. Now it will be up to South to double with those 19 HCPs. . .and show a little shock when +590 is the score for 4♠X making 4.

West will lose one heart and two clubs - but can cross-ruff the rest of the way as well as make the 5th heart good - or one of the top clubs in East's hand.

Once East shows 18-19 HCPs, West will go to a game in NT with 6 HCPs - and the 9 won by the J at trick 1 will allow East to make a move.

But making 3NT will be tough. East has five tricks off the top - and needs four more. At least one in spades is there. . .but it could be two if South is forced to play the spades from the ♠A.

Even if the ♣Q finesse doesn't work (and it won't), there will still be three club tricks for East as long as there's a way to get to dummy. That way will likely be the K.

East may be helped by the bidding. South's 1 overcall shows shortness in something else - and the fact that North passed means North doesn't even have 6 HCPs. South has at least 10 HCPs for that overcall (simple math on East's part) - and that means even with the K and Q, South must have something else.

The only way to make 3NT is to play for the drop of the ♣Q, and that's not a likely play. East will always lose the ♠A, as well as three heart tricks in South's hand. But East can't afford to lose the ♣Q. . .and those that do will be in 3NT down 1.

East's hand is too strong to preempt at 2♠. You've got 12 HCPs but also just 7 losers. And you can always rebid spades with that lovely six in the suit. Most South players will throw in a 2♣ overcall, but West won't have any of it and jump to 4♠.

Defensively, North will likely lead a club, but even if that's not the case East should lose two tricks with best defense.

Declarer's task to make 5♠ will be much easier if the opponents lead diamonds, but otherwise declarer will have to lose a diamond. Whatever is led (let's say it's a club), declarer wins at trick 1. Pull two rounds of spades. Now play diamonds. Your best bet is for the diamonds to be 4-2, with the Q-J doubleton. But when you play diamonds the first time and neither honor drops, you know you won't be that lucky! Still, there's hope for making 5. If the diamonds are 3-3, both honors will drop on the 3rd round of diamonds. Now the 2 is good in dummy for either East's losing club or losing heart. (H/T to Betty S.)

Will this hand be passed out at your table? The best hand (HCPs and shape) belongs to North, and North does have the "boss suit" of spades. Opening 1 by North will get South to introduce 1♠, and unless one of the opponents doubles spades to show the other major, South could play this hand 2♠ (down 1 with best defense). North can also use the "rule of 15", whereby the HCPs (11) and number of spades (4) equals 15 or more. If North does not open 1, East should pass without the spade suit - even though in this case there's a good board available to E/W. Remember, nothing is perfect in bridge!

West's jump in hearts shows a very strong hand. In 2/1, if East bids a new suit after going through 1NT Forcing, then West is obligated to pass. . .so bidding diamonds to "keep the bidding going" isn't going to work here. But East knows there's a heart fit - and with East's 7-loser hand, that's the equivalent of an opener in terms of shape.

With just 9 HCPs, it's tough for East to get going into 6, and many in our Friday morning group will end up in 4, possibly making +480. But should East decide to explore a slam, East will find West with 3 keycards (you're missing just 1) - and two Ks outside of hearts. That will be enough for SOME East players to bid 6.

To make 6, the A would be the most friendly lead. It's a cinch then. A heart would be more problematic, but the ♠Q is likely to be a lead by many Norths hoping to catch partner with extreme shortness in spades. Declarer's problem will be the club suit.

If declarer can get the A out before clubs are played, West's losing clubs can go on the long diamonds in dummy. However - check out your transportation - West has just two ways to get over there - the A, or by trumping a third spade. If declarer does not think this through the first time hearts are played, declarer may not get over to those diamonds and be down in a slam.

With five spades - and partner promising five - you'll be hard-pressed to find many West players that don't want to go right to a spade game here. Three heart losers and the A will cause 4♠ bidders to go down 1 - but many will be in the same spot here, so -100 for E/W could be very flat.

South's negative double has shown what is likely to be both majors - but tolerance for the 4th suit (here, diamonds). South's double at this level promises just three in each major but implies four. . .so look for most Norths to go ahead and bid either 1NT (with a singleton A at that!) or 2.

North has 12 HCPs, but may or may not make a 2♣ overcall here. With partner on lead, you can bet a club will be led, and that's not the best lead for your partner to make. But assuming North lays low at your table, New Minor Forcing will show five spades and 10+ HCPs to the opener - and the result will be a 4♠ contract.

There's also a double-fit here in spades and diamonds, and those are always worth a little extra. . .so 4♠ may be quite common on the traveler. And some Easts will make 4♠! But this contract can be defeated by East losing two clubs, the ♠A and A. The reason some may make 4♠ is because if a heart is led, taken by North, now the Q and J in dummy are good - and one of those will make one of East's losing clubs disappear. So if the "switch" isn't made at trick 2 to get those clubs, now East loses just three tricks.

South has the HCPs but not the shape for a 1NT overcall, but the real onus is on East for a rebid. As East is vulnerable, this might be a good opportunity to pass and defend 2. After all, doubling would show the other suits (not in East's best interest) - and it's an unpleasant thing to bid 2NT with a singleton Q and an unprotected ♣K. East is a minimum opener - pass and see where 2 ends up. (Down three with best defense, it should be a good board fort hose Easts that pass 2 by South.)

South may wish to get right to 3NT here, with 18 HCPs opposite a 2-level preemptive bid there should be a game somewhere. And there is. But it's up to West at this table to get in the way.

West may be looking at a sacrifice with 3♠, but not only is it possible this bid won't get doubled - but it takes away communication from N/S. South here is looking for a feature with North's hand. . .and 3 will certainly get South to bid 3NT. When West jumps in at 3♠, that makes it much more difficult for N/S to figure out what's what. . .and interference is the name of the game with some hands!

What would you and your partner do with North's hand here? Many partnerships in our Friday morning group play a double as a "stolen bid." There are conventions out there (Lebensohl) that can show four hearts and an invitational hand. . .but that convention is pretty advanced for our group.

Some Norths may wish to bid a natural 3, if that is your partnership agreement. But as you go on through your bridge playing career, you will run into hands like this where the opponents interfere with your bidding - and you'll want to have an agreement as to what means what. And whether you can get to 3!

When North bids Jacoby 2NT, South's first responsibility is to bid a good 5-card second suit at the 4-level. This also shows a singleton or void in one of the other two suits, of course. If no other 5-card suit is available, now South bids a singleton or void at the 3-level. If that isn't available, South shows points by bidding 4♠ with a minimum (it's a shut-out), 3NT with 15-17, and 3♠ with 18+ HCPs (slam interest).

Rather than go through Blackwood or Keycards, you can cuebid As as shown above; when North finds out that South has the K and the missing two As, now it's a cinch for North to be the one to go to a Grand Slam. That's because North now has a running suit in hearts - and North can figure on throwing some of South's losing minor suit cards on North's long hearts.

NOTE that even if South had five hearts, and North did not have any cards available to toss minor suit losers, the A still takes care of at least one of North's losing diamonds, so the only possible problem is a losing diamond. This hand would still make 6♠ easily and possibly 7♠ if the opponents guess wrong at the end (West in this case has the K and ♣K but can't keep both. . .so 7♠ might still make.)

ALSO! The diamond finesse - it's not needed. Players that try the diamond finesse before playing hearts will go down 1 losing to the K, but as long as the hearts break, there's no need to try it. Draw your trump, play your heart suit - and if the hearts don't break for some reason, THEN rely on the diamond finesse and hope for the best.

   150 0.00 6.00 2-Blumberg-Blumberg vs 8-Bluestein-Bluestein

This hand provides an interesting dilemma for South. You've got the best hand at the table; your RHO opened with your opening bid of 1♣; and if you double to show the majors, that generally indicates a tolerance for the other suit (diamonds). South players that double may be concerned - and rightly so - that North will bid diamonds. Then what?

One thing South can do is to bid 2♣; it's a Michaels cuebid showing 5-5 in the majors. South doesn't have 5-5 in the majors, but if North doesn't have a 4-card major to bid, even a 4-3 fit will probably be just fine considering the strength of South's hand alone. This also describes the shortness in diamonds that South has.

With East's opener of 1♣, South knows that the majority of HCPs in East's hand are NOT in clubs. . .so they are in the other suits. That will make it tough to get to a game for N/S, but a good partial in a major should make both North and South happy.

Opening 1 in 1st seat with just 10 HCPs might be a bit risky for some Norths, but you do have a rebid of clubs (even two times if needed) just in case partner rebids 1♠ or 1NT (forcing or not). East also is a little light to get into the bidding, even with a negative double. But 3 should be passed out by West who is hoping to take at least four tricks on his own.

West has the HCPs but not the shape for a 2NT opener, but when East shows two kings 3NT should be an easy contract to get to. With West's hand, what combination of two kings could East have that would be a problem for 3NT?

If East has the ♠K and K, there are two stoppers now in spades and possibly four tricks in hearts. that's 9 tricks off the top for 3NT.

If East has the K and K, then again one of the red suits should run - possibly both - and you might make 6NT here.

If East has the ♠K and K, it's possible diamonds will set up - you've got seven tricks off the top without diamonds running. . .and it may come down to a finesse for 3NT. But with 27 HCPs between you, the pairs that are NOT in 3NT should be in the minority.

It's not likely anyone is going to get to a 3NT contract even without a preemptive bid by South. 2♠ takes up quite a bit of bidding room, however, and although East has two stoppers in spades there's not much in hearts or clubs to get excited about. . .so 3 appears to be a safe contract.
